Artist Statement
Cloth speaks to me.
Silk whispers, lace breathes, quilts remember.
Mud cloth tells it’s story,
Boro and Shashiko mend what was broken.
Kimonos, African prints, couture gowns-
they weave through my imagination,
becoming lines, sketches, layers of paint and oil,
becoming resilience, identity, and femininity.
My canvas is a meeting place of cultures-
Japanese, African, American-
threads braided into color and form.
Like Barkley Hendricks,
I honor the gaze.
Eyes hold the truth,
inviting the viewer not only to look,
but to encounter, to witness, to know. ~
